Health Care Philosophy

Being a healthcare professional involves applying evidence-based practice that best suits the needs of a patient in a professional setting. Working alongside an interdisciplinary team, healthcare professionals strive to provide the highest quality of patient care, while also considering the patient’s wants and needs. My healthcare philosophy is to put the needs of my patient first. By effectively communicating with my patient and their family, respecting my patient’s wishes, and understanding by putting myself in their shoes, will help me achieve the highest level of patient care and develop meaningful patient-client relationships.

Respiratory Therapists are an integral part of the healthcare professional team, alongside physicians, nurses, lab technicians, and many more. Interprofessional practice will keep healthcare providers accountable for their actions, to ensure they are providing the utmost quality of care. The following elements should be demonstrated by a respiratory therapist while providing professional care:

Collaboration – contributing ideas for treatment plan, carry out designated responsibilities, assist fellow healthcare team members whenever possible
Communication – effectively provide transparent information to the patient and family, as well as regularly update fellow healthcare team members
Professionalism – respect for patient, patient’s loved ones, and all other working professionals while exhibiting ethical care to all
Consideration – support and honor both patient and family perspectives, while accommodating as best as possible to fulfil patient needs

My personal goal as a respiratory therapist is to remain a continuous learner. By keeping up to date with the latest treatments, technologies, and equipment available will ultimately help in treatment decision making and will benefit the overall care of my patients. Practicing and updating my skills while staying open minded to new modalities will help me become more efficient and confident in my practice.
